I’ve never been a plant gal, I have tried in the past… And killed them all! But recently I’ve been finding out more about why plants in your bedroom and house, in general, is a really good idea so these are my thoughts mixed in with some facts.
– They Look Awesome
I know how does this help you but honestly putting plants in my room has really made a big difference on how the décor comes together, my bedroom is grey and I was worried the green wouldn’t work but the colour really complements the room without being overpowering and ( I know this sounds cheesy) really gives you a connection to nature in a place full of Phones, iPad, Laptops and TVs.
– They Purified The Air
There is so much pollution nowadays but I always felt after going into your bedroom to relax the pollution stayed outside. Well not so much, and plants have the ability to filter toxic chemicals like formaldehyde and benzene from the air which you obviously want. Plants can also help with respiratory problems like sore throats and coughs this is because they raise the air’s humidity by releasing water as moisture vapour. Some of the best plants for air quality are Aloe Vera, Spider Plant, Snake Plant and Bamboo Palm.
– They Help You Sleep
Apparently, Plants like Jasmine, Lavender, Aloe Vera and Gardenia can increase the quality of your sleep, these plants give off a gentle soothing effect to your mind and body which In turn helps with your heart rate, blood pressure and stress levels. Also, it can reduce anxiety levels leading to better mood and quality of sleep which everyone can use a little help with in this day and age of high-stress jobs and general life.
– Helps Concentration And productivity
I have two plants around my desk and I truly think they have helped my productivity in one study, participants in a college computer lab with plants showed increased productivity. However, another study failed to find any benefits associated with plants so it may just be a placebo effect but id recommend putting a plant where you work as it can’t hurt and if nothing is improved you still have a pretty plant to look at.
– They Improve Overall Wellbeing
I swear I feel a lot happier now I have plants in my room and maybe it’s not all in my head as studies have shown that patients in hospitals who face garden views had greater chances of recovering more than those who were facing a wall. Another study shows patients in rooms with plants request less pain medication, have lower heart rates and blood pressure, experience less fatigue and anxiety, and are released from the hospital sooner, so if your visiting someone in a hospital instead of flowers maybe give them a succulent, Just a suggestion?
So I am now the proud owner of an Aloe Vera, and I believe a large Areca Palm, also a small Parlour palm ( I may have thrown a critically important piece of paper away that said what the plants actually are) and haven’t killed them yet ( though I have come close) and I have officially caught the houseplant bug and I really want more! I’ve decided I am going to do a how not to kill your houseplants blog post soon and though I am in no means an experienced or have a green thumb I do feel I can impart a little wisdom on my fellow plant murders!
